Our process.
Atelier Bois presents functional sculpture shaped by solid wood, practiced hands, and a workshop lineage that has produced and exported carved forms since 2000.
The form begins
while the wood is green.
The production partner behind the collection works in Thailand. Rough shaping begins while the wood is responsive, then every form moves through controlled drying, moisture testing, staged sanding, inspection, and hand finishing.
Shape
The essential silhouette is carved with enough material left for drying and final refinement.
Dry
The rough form is dried in stages. The workshop favors slower solar drying when timing and the form allow it.
Measure
Internal moisture is checked at the thickest point before the piece moves into its final shaping.
Sand
Rough sanding establishes the final profile by eye. Flat surfaces are kept functional while every silhouette remains singular.
Inspect
A second hand-sanding and quality review addresses inclusions, checking, tool marks, and any surface that needs correction.
Finish
Thin coats of translucent oil are rubbed in by hand and allowed to absorb between applications, building a quiet matte surface without hiding the grain.
No two surfaces
finish the same.
Translucent finishes allow the underlying light and dark wood tones to set the final color. The wood is not bleached into uniformity before finishing, so grain, swirls, tonal shifts, checking, inclusions, and small tool marks remain part of the object.
